Sculptures selected include a horse made from various pieces of metal, a seashell made out of stone, large profiles of human faces, a whimsical oversized insect-like piece, and several beautiful abstract and often colorful pieces. These ten works come from artists in seven states. The selected artists and sculptures to be displayed are: Michael Cottrell (Jacksonville, FL), Receptor, Steel, 10’ x 4’ x 2’ James Irving (Morrisville, VT), Divided, Painted Steel and granite, 8’ x 5’ x 3’ Cecilia Lueza, (St. Petersburg, FL), Diversity, Aluminum, stainless steel urethane, paint, epoxies, 6.5’ x 2’ x 2” Doug Makemson, (Nicholson, GA), Ain’t Gonna Work on Maggie’s Farm No More, Steel, cast iron and oak, 8’ x 3.5’ x 10’ Bruce Niemi (Kenosha, WI), Embrace the Day, Stainless steel, 10’7” x 3’8” x 3’4” Adam C. Walls (Laurinburg, NC), Creepy Crawley, Painted steel, 3’6” x 6’6” x 3’6’ Bruce H. White (Nokomis, FL), Piecemeal, Powder-coated aluminum, 10’ x 2’ x 10” Bill Wood (Fairfax, VA), A Few Degrees from Plumb and Square, Fiberglass and polished aluminum, 5’6” x 4’3” x 5’6” Valeria Yamamoto (Bay Harbor Island, FL), Seawhisper, Bonding cement, grout, metal mesh, concrete sealer, 5’7” x 5’6” x 4’ Glenn Zweygardt (Alfred Station, NY), Basalt Man, Basalt, cast bronze and cast glass, 9’ x 2’6” x 2’6” The sculptures will be installed in early March and will remain on display through January of next year. A full color catalogue will be produced to accompany the exhibition. The Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition is a joint project of the City of Winter Haven and Polk Museum of Art. A call to artists was placed in October. Entries were due by January 2, 2010. The selection was made by a committee that included representatives from the Museum, the City of Winter Haven, and the Winter Haven community. Best of Show, 2nd Place, and Honorable Mention prizes will be awarded and will be chosen by an independent judge. The Central Park Stroll, a street party in honor of the Winter Haven component, will be held on April 15, 5:30 - 7:30pm. Visitors to the event will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite sculpture and the piece that receives the most votes will win the People’s Choice award.
